While conventional transmissive LCDs used a backlight to make the display visible, the effects of sunlight made them rather difficult to see outdoors. And achieving a full-colour display with conventional reflective displays was difficult. Sharp’s Super Mobile LCD was perfect for outdoor use, in fact, the brighter the ambient light, the easier it was to see.
